The Brain Trust on conflict in the dental office (DHP154)

Jason and Alan are joined by Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Melissa Zettler and coach/guru/rock star Suzanne Robinson to help manage conflicts in the dental office!

Jason and Alan are both confirmed avoiders of conflict. So we brought in the “A-team” to help us understand how to manage it! All dentists offices have to deal with confrontations. Whether it’s between patients and team members or within the dental team, humans are always humans! How can we be better at dealing with it? This Brain Trust will bring you a long way to understanding your strengths and weaknesses and most importantly help you learn to be a better leader!

The Brain Trust on specialists in the GP office (DHP152)

Is having a specialist in the GP office the ultimate “have your cake and eat it too” or is it a management nightmare that makes everyone worse off? Dr. Frank Clayton and Dr. Paul Goodman join Jason and Alan to discuss.

You hate endo, but you hate to send it out. You’d love to do more big implant cases, but your local specialists are too busy to get patients in quickly. What about having a specialist in your office? Dr. Frank Clayton and Dr. Paul Goodman have all kinds of experience on this topic (positive and negative) and they join the Dental Hacks to talk about the pros and cons of incorporating specialists into a general dental office. If you’re interested in getting some help with bringing a specialist into your office be sure to get in touch with Paul Goodman at his Dental Nachos Facebook group! He’s got some really good checklists you need to see, too:

You want to know something that can take your composite esthetics to the next level? Opaquers. The latest composites have some amazing characteristics, but many of them are pretty translucent. Usually that’s a great thing, but sometimes it’s a problem. Cosmedent has been making a wide variety opaquers for years and we guarantee you can find some use for these bad boys in your dentistry! Go check out Cosmedent’s Creative Color opaquers at www.dentalhacks.com/opaquers.

Posterior composites have their own special challenges. It’s not only good enough to have interproximal contacts. You really need to have realistic contours. Real teeth are curvy. They aren’t straight. The the Bioclear Biofit matrices with injection molded composite are the only matricies that give you anatomic curves every time. Check the Biofit matrices out at www.dentalhacks.com/biofit.

This Brain Trust is packed full of no nonsense, actionable ideas for hiring. • A listener proposes a low debt way to do a startup. Can it work?
  • What’s the simplest and most consistent way to do class II composites?
  • Howard Farran thinks new grads need to do every procedure to service their debt? What do the Hacks think?
  • A whole bunch of other stuff

Smithson on Ceramics (DHP148)

Dr. Jason Smithson talks about how he treatment plans, prepares, temporizes and restores teeth for all kinds of ceramic restorations.

“Jason Smithson is that composite guy with Cosmedent, right?” Not so fast there, cowboy. He does teach at Cosmedent and he does teach some really great composite courses. But he’s no one trick pony. In his upcoming course, “Minimally Invasive Ceramic Restorations: From Concept to Completion” he’s teaching how he treatment plans, prepares, temporizes and restores teeth that need ceramic onlays and crowns.

He also talks about the old but new style of preparations called “vertical” or “edgeless preparation. When does he use that? Why? And how?

We also dig into how he presents. He has a pretty phenomenal case acceptance and how he gets that isn’t what you might think!

The future of practice management software with John Kois Jr. (DHP147)

What does practice management software look like in the future? John Kois, Jr., CEO of the Kois Center in Seattle, WA has a pretty good idea about that. In episode 147, John sat down with Alan to talk about a new, cloud based practice management software called Evidentiae Technologies. This innovative software was created to help dentists with administering and organizing patient data to help formulate risk factors and even treatment plans. John explains all the things that make this software worth checking out. Rumor has it that it will be available to the general dental public sometime this fall!

Real dentists do composite with Dr. Dennis Hartlieb (DHP145)

In episode 145 Dr. Dennis Hartlieb joins Jason and Alan to talk about his journey from believing composite was a “temporary material” into creating an entire rehab in composite!

Dr. Dennis Hartlieb was one of Dr. Frank Spear’s original students. He’s been learning excellence in restorative dentistry for 25  years or more. But like many dentists, he used to believe composite had no place in long term restorative dentistry. Then he met Dr. Buddy Mopper and he began to change his mind. Dennis is a really engaged teacher. Really approachable and seems to really understand how dentists learn. Some highlights:

  • Dennis’s approach to team bulding…learn one, do one, teach one!
  • Simple composite solutions that can make a huge difference!
  • How does sleep apnea affect restorative dentistry?
  • A description of Dennis’ course at Cosmedent, “CPR for the worn dentition.”
