Jason and Alan welcome Dr. Frank Spear to the podcast to talk about some big picture concepts. Frank was asked to give the keynote lecture to the Cal-lab Annual Session in 2019 and was asked to predict the future of dentist/dental lab relationships. So he dug into a lot of statistics and research and now we’re going to share some of that with the Dental Hacks listeners! Some of the things we talk about with Dr. Spear:

  • Why have the number of dental labs been shrinking?
  • Where have all the lab technicians gone?
  • Is the narrative about corporate dentistry taking over accurate?
  • What happened in the mid-70’s through the mid-80’s that helped create a particularly large cohort of dentists that are now reaching retirement?
  • Is the need for dentists growing or shrinking?
  • How will technology help us with treatment planning?
  • How did he transition from traditional perio/pros to implants and how did that transition go?
  • What has made implants a more predictable treatment option starting in the 90’s?
  • Are we seeing dentists move too quickly to implants? Will there be a backlash?
  • What happened to the mustache?

We appreciate the time that Dr. Spear took with us and we think you’ll really enjoy this episode! If you like the episode, would you please tell your friends about it?
